I. Question 1: 4 mark​

How important is research to writers in crafting their story's setting? Explain three phases of research that are mentioned in video lessons of Course 3: The Craft of Setting and Description.





II. Question 2: 6 mark: Write a Creative story​

Students will write a short story of at least 400 words, either fiction or nonfiction, based on a prompt provided in advance by the instructor/exam board, or selected from a pre-designed topic list.




Story requirements:

  1. A clear plot structure: with beginning, development, climax, and resolution



  2. Well-developed, consistent, and memorable characters



  3. A vividly described setting in terms of time and space, rich in sensory detail



  4. Use of creative language that reflects a personal and distinctive writing style

Topic 1: Imagine an election in which robots participate.






  • Suggestions: Develop the plot around the election process and the conflict between humans and technology.



  • Hints:
    • Start with the context of technological advancement and societal acceptance of robots.



    • Introduce the main character as a candidate alongside the participating robots.



    • Create a climax when an incident occurs during the election, such as fraud or a robot uprising.



    • End with the main character facing societal changes and their consequences.


Topic 2: Write about a group of people resisting a major environmental project.






  • Suggestions: Depict diverse characters with unique motivations and build conflict between the resistance group and project supporters.



  • Hints:
    • Start with information about the project and the issues it causes for the environment.



    • Introduce the characters in the resistance group, each with their motivations.



    • Develop the plot as they organize protests and confront project supporters.



    • Conclude with the outcome of the movement and changes in the characters' mindsets.


Topic 3: Tell the story of a 70-year-old deciding to learn programming.






  • Suggestions: Create an inspiring story about lifelong learning and exploring new knowledge, with details about their learning environment.



  • Hints:
    • Begin with the bold decision of the character and reactions from family and friends.



    • Introduce the learning process and the challenges the character faces.



    • Develop the plot with humorous and touching situations in the classroom.



    • Conclude with the character using programming skills to change their life or help others.


Topic 4: Tell about the changing cultural values in modern society.






  • Suggestions: Depict interactions between generations and how cultural values are reshaped in today's society.



  • Hints:
    • Begin with a scene of a traditional family or community undergoing changes.



    • Introduce characters representing different generations.



    • Develop the plot with conflicts over values and traditions.



    • Conclude with a compromise or new understanding between the generations.


Topic 5: Tell about the consequences of lacking family in life.






  • Suggestions: Create a dark context of what happens when family values are no longer respected in society.



  • Hints:
    • Begin with the main character growing up in an incomplete family.



    • Introduce the relationships and emotions the character experiences.



    • Develop conflict with the wrong decisions the character makes due to lack of guidance.



    • Conclude with realization and seeking connection with family or community.
